As I sat around the Thanksgiving table with my family this past weekend, I just kept having these moments where I just felt so much joy and so much gratitude and so much love. 

It wasn't always like this for me. There were plenty of days and years, where I just felt so discouraged by who I was and in my inability to love. I was so ashamed, so mean and ugly to myself and to others, and so spiteful and resentful. I was in despair, for who I was and who I was not, where I was in my life and where I was not. 

And I almost missed figuring it out. I almost gave up. I almost believed my brain when it told me that I could never really change and that I was too much of a mess. That I had done too much damage, and  it was way too late to be able to fix any of it. 

I almost missed figuring out how to really love myself, my life and my family like I wanted to. 

There have been a lot of experiences that I almost missed out on, too. 

You know that crossing the finish line of my 29029 endurance event was one of my favorite experiences of the year (and really, my whole life). And I almost missed that one too. I almost let my brain talk me out of signing up, and I came really close to believing the thoughts it gave me that it was going to be too hard. And it wasn't for somebody like me, and it wasn't worth it. And it didn't really matter anyway. 

So I’m here to tell you that whatever it is that you’re going to do in your life that you're scared to do, that when your brain says, “it can't be different” or “you're not capable of that,” it really can keep you from the best parts of your life. 

You might be really, really scared of failing or looking stupid or doing it all wrong or being disappointed (like I was). 

When the only thing that should scare us is missing out on the moments and experiences we really want. 

The only thing that keeps us from any of the experiences we want is our own brain. 

Maybe you think you're the problem, but you just don't know what to do about that. And what you end up doing is beating yourself up and being mad at yourself all the time and hating yourself. (I know that because that's what I did.)

But the truth is that it wasn't ever me. I wasn't the problem, and neither are you. It is always our brain. 

The problem is always our brain, when you really understand why your brain does the things that it does. And your ability to change that and manage that unlocks the power that each of us have to create and accomplish the goals and the dreams that we have and to take them from dreams to done. 

Your brain will always look for what is wrong. It will create excuses for you and scare you and encourage you to give up. 

And this is why coaching works like nothing else does: Because we are working on the real problem, which is our brain.
