Three Essential Thoughts that Change Your Life

Ever wonder what it really takes to change your life and finally turn your desires into reality? The answer is simpler than you might think. I know from experience.

When I think about the differences between me today and me five years ago—and I see the differences in my body or my money or my relationships or my daily activities or my spiritual life—it is shocking how differently these two versions of me are experiencing our lives.

It can be tempting to think that these two versions of me are living different lives because I am taking different actions and making different choices every day. But that is only happening because of what I am thinking.

All the changes in my life are there because I think differently than I used to.

Your life is created by your thoughts and whatever it is that you want to create in your life, whoever you want to be, and whatever experiences you want to have, they are available to you by changing the way you think.

In today’s podcast I’m sharing the three essential thoughts that will allow you to change your life in any way you want.

Why people in similar circumstances behave differently

When I think about myself in the past (same me, just in a different time), there are so many differences in the way I lived my life and the way I felt about my life, myself and others.

The results - the experiences I’m having in my life - come from the actions I take on a daily basis. But why are my actions so different now?

And how can you take different actions and experience different results in your own life if you want to?

I believe there are two reasons.

First, your life (and every part of your life) is created by your thoughts. Before, I thought my life was created by my decisions and my actions…I just didn’t know that the decision wasn’t so much about what I chose to do and instead all about what I chose to think.

Your life is created by what you believe. Your beliefs might be stopping you from taking the actions you need to take. I don't say this to shame you. It’s actually the best news I could ever offer you. You are not the problem.

You just need different thoughts. And if you are willing to change those, everything else about your life can change.

The second thing I didn’t know back then is that what you think right now is never true. Your brain will always underestimate you. It will either want to point out what’s gone wrong, where you aren’t capable or where you’re going to fail. It’s trying to protect you, but this doesn’t help you grow.

I want you to be skeptical of every single thought your brain offers up. Question it, then decide what you want to think.

3 thoughts that will change your life

If you choose to adopt these three thoughts, I promise they will change your life.

#1: What I want is available to me. There is no limit on the number of great experiences or meaningful lives out there.

When your brain tells you that you can’t have what you want because of your past, because you’ve never done it before or because you're not that kind of a person, just stop thinking it.

Instead, know that there is a magical equation for every single human being to get what they want. And it's not just reserved for the select few. You don’t have to be in the right place at the right time.

The equation is if you think it, you will create it in your life. And all you have to do is decide that you're going to believe you can, and what you want is available to you.

#2: What I want is good.

When you start working toward a goal, your brain might tell you that it’s selfish, unimportant or a waste of time.

So, how do we know what matters, what is good and worthy to pursue?

Wanting it is enough. Whatever you want to work on is good.

#3 What I want is easier than I think.

Your brain wants you to think that things are too hard, too complicated, too far away and too different from who you are now.

But the things you want really are so much closer than you think. And what you want is just one thought away. The thing that makes it long and hard is that we keep stopping because of our brains.

If you just keep moving forward, your goal is inevitable.

I never want you to use those thoughts against yourself to make yourself wrong. I want you to use them to fuel you towards the life that you want.

Wherever you are, there is a good reason for it. Wherever you are, you're only there because of the thoughts you have been thinking, because your brain is doing its job.

But while your brain does its job, you also need to do yours. You need to choose the thoughts that will propel you to the life you want.

So, today I kind of wanted to revisit an experience that I had recently and kind of I know that I've told you about it here on the podcast, but I kind of want to pull it apart a little bit more and point out a few things that I think will be really useful to you in your life. So I, I think I told you about how after I accomplished 29029 and I won my medal and I got my red hat and, you know, I made it to the top of 29,000,29 feet. I think I told you that I a few weeks later, I was on my way to physical therapy and I passed this kind of vacant lot in the desert where and I had this flashback where I remembered being at that very spot, pulling over in the dirt there in the desert and having to get out of my car and lay down in the dirt because my back pain was so bad, I just couldn't drive my car anymore.

I was taking my son to school and I was just like I could not stand the pain one more second. And I just pulled off there in the desert and I laid down in the dirt. And through my tears I called my friend and asked her to come and take my son to school and to take me home. And I, as I was, you know, after having just finished this huge endurance event and passing that spot in in the desert there, like I have just reflected again and again, like what a miracle it is. Like the changes that have occurred in my life. And I want to kind of talk to you about that today and really point out a few things that that I hope you have seen, but I don't want you to miss in case you haven't. And as I talk about this, I want to be really clear, okay? I'm going to talk about these two versions of me, The Girl in the Dirt and the girl at the top of the mountain. And as I do that, I want to be really clear that I do not think the me at the top of the mountain is any better than the girl in the dirt, because she isn't the me that made it to the finish line at 29029 is not any better than any other version of me that has ever existed.

But she is having completely different experiences in her life and I think that matters like we are here and our choices are never about getting to a better version of us getting to the acceptable version of us. They are really and truly about choosing the life that we want to be experiencing. The other day, my son and I, we were laughing at a book that we saw at Barnes and Noble that said, "Like Be You Only Better," right? I think this is like the message that we are always bombarded with. Be your true self, but also you need to be better. You need to be better fast, right? And so I just really like want to start with that understanding that like, this is not about being a better me. Like that girl in the dirt, she is just as worthy and valuable and good as me that accomplished something. But there are certain experiences that I can't have in the dirt. There are certain feelings and emotions that I cannot have and cannot access when I am laying in the dirt. And so, this podcast is really about thinking about the experiences that you want to be having in your life and not about trying to get better.

So, I want to start by pointing out that these two versions of me, she's the same person. She's she has the same body, the same age. Actually, one of them is a little bit older, right? But she has the same past. She has the same health history. She birth the same amount of kids. She has the same, like femur length and like calf strength and the same physical limitations. But the way that they are experiencing their lives is completely different and not just physically. If you look at these two versions of me, they have different relationships. One has more love in her life. One has a business. She has a different outlook on her money and her time and her worth. And the reason that she's here on Earth and she has completely different results. She is living her life differently. So, what is making the difference there between these two versions of me? For sure, I'm making different choices, right? You can see that, like the actions I'm taking on a daily basis for these two versions of me are now, like, completely different.

But why? Why are those actions different and how? It's not like the girl in the dirt wasn't trying like I was there. She was trying, right? It's not like she didn't have any idea what to do or how to be happy or how to get in shape or how to live her life, right? Like, she knew what to do, but she wasn't doing it. And I want you to think about why. And I want to offer you that. It was because of what she believed. She believed deep down that she was limited. She believed that she couldn't change and that she was a failure. She believed that it didn't really matter what choices she made today because she had wasted her life for way too long to make a difference now, right? She believed like it really was just too late. Like, what was the point? She believed, like, this was just who she was and all she could hope for and given, like, her body and her life choices and given her lack of direction and discipline, that, like, this was pretty much all that was available to her.

She believed that her body was broken, that her spirit was weak, and that her dreams were too big and too far away and required like way more talent and confidence and ability than she had. And that never she wasn't ever really going to get what she wanted. And most of all, she believed that she was unlovable. She believed for sure. She knew that she was hard to live with, that she was a disappointment and always the problem. She believed that she was a mess and that that meant that she was worthless. And like I remember being her and thinking how broken and bad and beyond help I really was. Now, why am I bringing this up? I bring it up because I'm afraid that some of you think that, like, I'm fundamentally a different kind of person, that you like that somehow. Like, I am just more capable than you. And you have disqualified yourself from so many of the experiences that you want saying like, well, that's just not for me.

And I get it, like back then I would have done the exact same thing. In fact, I did, like I told myself all the time, Well, it's just different for them. Like they are people that that are good and disciplined and like, have their lives together. They are doing their life right. And like, there's those kind of people. And then there's me, right? And we are not the same. But this wasn't ever true. It wasn't true for me then. And it isn't true for you now. And what I want you to know is that really and truly I am the exact same person, the exact same spirit, and the exact same body. Who is simply thinking different thoughts. I'm just the same person making different choices inside my mind. And like those choices inside my own head, those thoughts make me act and show up differently in my life. And I just want you to know that for sure, that wherever you are in the dirt or at the top of the mountain or somewhere in between, your thoughts are putting you there. And like, I think we should have a pact on this podcast that we never use anything that I say against yourself, okay?

Like let's just make an agreement that you're never going to use this podcast. And the things that I have to share against yourself to make you wrong or shame yourself. When I say that, whether you're in the dirt or the top of the mountain or somewhere in between, it's because of your thoughts. I don't say that to shame you. I see that as like, the best news I could ever offer you, that you are not the problem. It's just your thoughts. And if you are willing to change those, everything else about your life can change, okay?

So, I'm gonna offer you today three thoughts that I just think you should adopt, like, immediately. And before I share those, I just want to, like, lay the ground work for why it's so important to adopt new thoughts. Why it's so important to think differently about yourself. And these two things, like the foundation of everything, are the two things that I didn't know back then. The girl in the dirt did not know these things. And but I do know them now. And knowing them has made a huge difference. So first, you need to know that your life and every part of your life is created by your thoughts. I thought it was my actions. I thought my actions were the problem. I thought the way I was showing up was the problem. Like, I understood that my life was created by my decisions. I just didn't know that the decision was wasn't so much about what I chose to do and instead all about what I chose to think. I was. I was trying to change my decisions too far down the river. I needed to, like, move upstream to my thoughts. Okay, the second thing that I didn't know then that I do know now, is that what you think right now is never true.

Okay, so like what my brain thought about my life and my potential and what I was capable of. It was totally wrong about that, it was wrong then, and P.S. it's even wrong now. Even after everything I've created, it's still underestimating me. And so, is your brain. What you think about yourself is never actually true. Your brain is wrong about you and all of its thoughts about what it thinks of you, what you're capable of, like it is underestimating you. And those thoughts are the only problem. So, you've got to stop believing your brain. Like fundamentally to ensure your survival, your brain is going to bet against you, which is. I know, strange, right? But it's going to want to point out what's gone wrong, where you aren't capable, where you're going to fail. It's going to try to protect you from that failure and that disappointment. It's going to try to protect you from rejection and loss. And I just want to offer you that you could be skeptical about every single thing your brain tells you and still be all right.

You don't have to believe any of it, your brain cannot predict the future. And even the story that is telling about your past isn't true. I will never forget hearing an interview with Leah Goldstein, who had this, like really, really bad bike accident when the doctors told her like she would never walk again, let alone get on the bike. And she just said, like I heard them say those words. I heard them say, you will never walk again. And she said and I just thought, they don't know, like and I want you to think this way about every thought that your brain gives you. And every time your brain says, like you, you're never going to do that. You can't do that. You're not capable of that. I really want you to think it doesn't know. I just want you to be skeptical of every single thought it offers you, okay? So those are the two things that I didn't know then that I do know now. One, that my thoughts are creating my life. And two, I don't have to believe anything my brain tells me. I don't have to believe any current thought that I have about myself. Your life as it is right now is just a result of the thoughts you think and none of the thoughts you think are true.

Okay, so they are just sentences, all those thoughts, they are just words. They are just sentences that your brain made up. And no matter how true they feel or how much proof your brain can give you that they are true, you are allowed to think something totally different. The other day I was watching this special on Netflix and they were interviewing Serena Williams coach, his name is Patrick Mouratoglou and he was telling about this experience in 2015 or 2016 at Wimbledon. They were a couple of weeks out from Wimbledon. And Serena just like was not getting any of her shots up towards the top of the net. And like, her stats were really, really bad. And he just talked about like, well, I'm her coach. I got to figure out something. And so he went to her and he told her he's like, Hey, I just want you to know that like whenever you have a short ball and whenever, like the ball is short at the net, he's just like, I just love it because I know that you're going to get 80% of those shots.

And she was like, What? What are you talking about? I'm terrible at the net. And he's like, well, you know, you might feel like you're terrible. You might think you're terrible. But, you know, the stats show that you get 80% of those shots. And she was like, really? She's like, that's incredible. And so, like, after he told her that, she started going to the net, like every time there was a sure sort of state, you know, standing back and just like thinking that the point was lost, she started moving up towards the net by believing that she was good at the net, changed her behavior. She started moving towards the net and he said, it turns out that believing that she was 80% at the net made her 80% at the net, like, he's like, was it a lie? Yes, he's like, does it matter? No, right? Like, it matters what you think. And if you think you're not good, then that you don't even try. And that is so true, right? If you think about me there in the dirt, like if I believed that I was limited. I don't try. If I believe this is all I can offer for, I don't try. Like, what is the truth? The truth is, whatever you believe is the girl in the dirt right about me Is the girl at the top of the mountain right about me.

They're both true. Because whatever I'm thinking, my results match those thoughts, exactly. So the girl in dirt was right? I was limited. The girl in the mountain was right, I am not limited. So, like, it just doesn't matter what you currently think. It matters what you're going to decide to think. And in that spirit, I want you to give you three thoughts to decide to think just like adopt them in your life. I promise they will change your life.

Okay, so the three thoughts that I want you to adopt are what I want is available to me. What I want is good, and what I want is easier than I think. Okay, so let me just explain them, number one, what I want is available to me. I find that your brain wants to tell you you can't like, immediately, right? Even if you don't know it for sure. Your brain just wants to tell you like, I don't think that that's for you. I was thinking this week I was with you, with the rest of the country, with everybody else, probably listening to this podcast. I tried to get Taylor Swift tickets this week, and in fact, like everybody in my family was trying. We had three verified passes and like, none of us could come up with tickets, right? Even though we followed all the rules and stood in all the queues and it just did not work out, right?

And I was thinking about how like so many times like this is how I viewed my life, that there was just like a limited amount of, like great experiences out there. There's a limited supply of meaningful lives and other people got them and I was in the wrong line or I didn't do it right. And so, I can't have what other people have. And I just want you to know that that's nonsense. And I just want you to stop thinking any sentence that says that you can't for whatever reason that says you can't because of your past or says you can't because you've never done it before, says you can't because you're not that kind of a person that says you can't like all of that. I just want you to stop thinking any sentence and any thought that says you can't. And I want you to recognize that instead. Listen, there is just one magical equation for every single human being to get what they want is not just reserved for the select few.

It's not just reserved for the few who, like, you know, can be in the right queue and the right line in the right place at the right time. The equation is if you think it it you will create it in your life and all you have to do is decide that you're going to believe you can do it. You're going to believe you can have it, that if somebody else can do it, then so can you. What you want is available to you.

Okay, number two, I want you to think what I want is good. We talked a lot about this last week, but I just notice, like, for me, as soon as I start towards my goal, towards changing my life, towards changing anything in my life, my brain would always tell me that this was like wrong in some way, that it was selfish in some way, that maybe somehow I started focusing on trivial things and things that didn't matter and things that weren't important, and I was wasting my time and maybe it didn't matter anyway. Like, I don't know why this, like, seems to work on us. Like we want to make such good choices with our life.

As soon as we choose something and as soon as we decide, okay, I want this thing, our brain is like, Oh, that might not be a good thing to choose. And we spend our life spinning, right? So, I just want, you know, to think about how do I know what matters, How do I know what counts is good and worthy to pursue and to work on? I just want to offer you that. You just get to decide. Like when I came to this work, I started working on my body, and my brain just told me, like, this is such a waste of time. This isn't like really meaningful work. And like, you should be focused on more important things, but like, honestly, it's just the first domino, right? Like, what I'm really learning is how to manage my mind.

And it doesn't matter what area you're doing. That management, it's all spiritual work is I choose what I want over what my brain wants. That is the spiritual work that we came to do. And it doesn't matter what area of your life you want to do that work, there's there's no wrong way to do it. And whatever you want to work on is good. Desire is all you need. So, adopt that thought that what you want is good. Okay, the last thought I want you to adopt is what I want is easier than I think your brain wants to tell you. That is too hard and too complicated and too far away and too different from who you are now. Like, if the girl later and see me like, you know, on my way to physical therapy after climbing that mountain, she would have been like, That is impossible, it's too far away, right? But the things you want really are so much closer than you think. I never could have thought that that was possible in such a short amount of time. And what you want is just one thought away. The thing that makes it long and the thing that makes us hard is that we keep stopping because of our brains.

Okay, so I really want you to think about this metaphor. I want you to think about driving across town, and I want you to think about like, if I decide that I'm going to go across town, I can get in my car and I can drive there. But I want you to think about, like, how long it's going to take me if. I pull off at every exit and wonder if I can really do it and wonder if I can really get there. Or wonder if it's like, you know, a good thing to pursue driving across town, right? Like, really think about that. Like, we are, in effect, trying to, like, go towards our goal and then pulling over every time our brain has an objection, every time our brain questions us or doubts us.

Like, if I don't let my thoughts stop me or derail me or sidetrack me, then it is inevitable that I will get where I want to go, right? We sometimes think like, well, I can make that goal, but I don't know if I can get there. Listen, if you don't stop, you will get there. A rival is inevitable, and the only factor really is to just stop thinking the thoughts that make us stop taking action. Every thought you think along the way makes a difference. So, make sure that you are picking the sentences and the thoughts that are going to get you where you want to be.

Like if I am building my business and I get off and I stop working on it every time I see like a road sign that says it's not working, I pull over and I stop and I stay there for a while. Like, it takes a long time to get to my goals. If I'm working on losing weight or saving money, but I get off every time I see a sign that says, like, you've never been good at this, never, you're not going to make it. You've never been able to like. You aren't disciplined enough for this. Like every time, like I'm going to stop my progress every time I stop for those thoughts. So, I want you to remember that you actually aren't in a hurry to get across town. And like those miles and those changes are going to stack up fast. And the less thoughts you think that stop you along the way, the faster they stack up, the faster those miles stack up. And this is why I, like I value coaching so much because every one of us has a brain that wants to tell us these thoughts, that wants to give us these sentences and make us stop that make us give up and make us pull over that like stop our progress towards the things we want.

Like every one of us looks around when we see one of those signs and we see all the evidence and we decide this means like, Well, it's not even worth trying to drive there because we're never going to make it. But a coach helped you see through all that nonsense. Your coach knows that the only thing between you and what you want are those sentences. Are those sentences that you're letting deter you and stop you and distract you and your coach will help you remember what you need to think in order to keep moving. In order to keep going. Like, I just find that whatever I'm working towards, my brain is going to produce so much negative emotion and so many doubts and so many thoughts. To get me to stop that I have to manage that. I have to be constantly deciding on purpose what I'm going to think and the thoughts I need to think in order to keep going. Okay, these are the three thoughts that I wish I could plant in your mind that you would never forget. What you want is available. What you want is good. And what you want is easier than you think.

I never want you to use those thoughts against yourself to make yourself wrong. I want you to use them to fuel you towards the life that you want. Wherever you are, there is a good reason for it. Wherever you are, you're only there because of the thought you have been thinking. Your brain is doing its job and that never makes you wrong. But while your brain does its job, this is your reminder that you need to do your job. You need to choose the thoughts you want that will propel you to the life you want. And if you want to be somewhere else, if you are like metaphorically lying in the dirt somewhere, you want to be somewhere else. It is time to start thinking these thoughts. What you want is available to you. It is not just reserved for someone else. What you want is good. There is nothing more important that you need to be working on. And what you want is easier than you think. As long as you keep managing your brain and it's okay if you don't know how to do that like nobody taught us, right? I remember just like, being astounded that there was all of this untapped unused agency inside of me, inside my own head that I had never tapped into.

I had never used. We haven't been taught how to question the things our brain is telling us. To be skeptical of it. And we haven't been taught how to choose, how to think something else. And so if you want help with this, if you want to change your thoughts, to change your life, I want to invite you to coaching. Like I said, my next group starts in January and registration is happening right now. If you are thinking about what you really want, what you really want to have and do and be in your life, coaching will help you get there. Changing the way I thought changed my whole life. That's the only difference. Honestly and truly. That girl in the dirt, the girl in the mountain. Like they just think different thoughts and like, this is a skill I will always have where I am now. This isn't the end. This isn't the finish line. But wherever I want to go, the principles are the same. To know that it's available to me. To know that it is good. And to know that it's easier than I think. If I manage my brain all the way there. And maybe that's just the best part to be able to have the confidence that anything I want to change now or in the future I can. And I am not alone in that. Every single one of you has the ability to do that. And that, my friends, is 100% awesome. I love you for listening, and I'll see you next week.

The next round of my coaching program made four more starts in January, and I want you to be a part of it. I'll show you how to change your brain to create more joy, more love, and more accomplishment in your life. The only thing between you and the life you want are the thoughts in your head. And coaching will show you how to change that. Go to Aprilpricecoaching.com to sign up.
